Plastic - serial killer

September 6th, 2008

Hundred milliontonnes of plastic debris litters the oceans of the world! A particularly dense accumulation can be found 1000 miles off the California coast in an area known as the ‘Central North Pacific Gyre’. What gets in here can be trapped for decades! The build up of plastics in the gyre is estimated to span five million square miles!
The world produces sixty billion tonnes of plastic everyyear! We are increasingly polluting our land, rivers and seas. 100000 marine mammals are killed each year by plastics both directly and indirectly through toxic substances in plastics which leach into surrounding water. Plastic waste littering the land create even greater ecological problems and damage to health of humans and animals. We don’t notice it since it is slow poisoning!
